Foot Ulcers and Prompt Treatment

Wounds on the feet are common in diabetic patients. Many patients may have difficulty in feeling any discomfort on their feet, which may be a result of neuropathy. It is important to inspect your feet daily if you are diabetic, so any cuts, scrapes, or bruises can be promptly treated. A sore on the foot may lead to a foot ulcer. This is a type of wound that can possibly lead to amputation and must be diagnosed and treated correctly. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this type of wound can consist of a foul odor emanating from the area, swelling, and it is often painful when walked on. It is beneficial to properly clean the wound, apply the correct dressing, and wear shoes that have ample room for the entire foot. If you are afflicted with diabetes, and have developed a foot ulcer, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage your condition.

Wound care is an important part in dealing with diabetes. If you have diabetes and a foot wound or would like more information about wound care for diabetics, consult with Dr. Robert Fink from Brunswick Foot & Ankle Group. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Wound Care?

Wound care is the practice of taking proper care of a wound. This can range from the smallest to the largest of wounds. While everyone can benefit from proper wound care, it is much more important for diabetics. Diabetics often suffer from poor blood circulation which causes wounds to heal much slower than they would in a non-diabetic.

What Is the Importance of Wound Care?

While it may not seem apparent with small ulcers on the foot, for diabetics, any size ulcer can become infected. Diabetics often also suffer from neuropathy, or nerve loss. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.

How to Care for Wounds

The best way to care for foot wounds is to prevent them. For diabetics, this means daily inspections of the feet for any signs of abnormalities or ulcers. It is also recommended to see a podiatrist several times a year for a foot inspection. If you do have an ulcer, run the wound under water to clear dirt from the wound; then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with a bandage. Bandages should be changed daily and keeping pressure off the wound is smart. It is advised to see a podiatrist, who can keep an eye on it.

Those with the condition known as flat feet may be diagnosed with having little to no arch in their feet. Possible causes of flat feet are genetic factors passed down from parents, weak arches, a foot or ankle injury, arthritis, damage of the posterior tibial tendon, or diseases of the nervous system. Those who experience flat feet may find relief in certain exercises, for example heel cord stretching. Fitted insoles and orthotics may also bring relief to pressure being put on the foot and alleviate pain. For a proper diagnosis and advised treatment regime, we recommend that you consult with a podiatrist.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Dr. Robert Fink from Brunswick Foot & Ankle Group. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Effective Stretches For Foot Muscles

People who enjoy running are generally aware of the importance of having strong and stable feet. This can be accomplished by frequently performing stretching techniques that are designed to keep the feet flexible and strong. The feet are comprised of different types of muscles. Shorter muscles are known as intrinsic muscles, and are found inside the foot. They are responsible for moving the feet, and providing stability. A simple and effective movement known as toe curling can help to improve overall foot function. Additionally, the toes may become stronger when an effort is made to keep the big toe on the floor while lifting the other toes. Research has indicated the ankle will benefit when heel lifts are performed. If you would like more information about the importance of stretching the feet, or suggestions on specific foot stretches, please consult with a podiatrist.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Dr. Robert Fink from Brunswick Foot & Ankle Group. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.

A Broken Foot May Be Common in Children

A broken foot can be a common ailment that may occur in children. This can be a result of the bones in the feet that have not fully developed and are more fragile than the bones in the adult foot. If a broken foot occurs, noticeable symptoms often include severe pain, redness, swelling, and it may be difficult to walk on. Your child may find moderate relief when the affected foot is elevated, and a splint may temporarily be applied that can provide the necessary support. After a proper diagnosis is performed, which generally consists of having and X-ray taken, a cast or a protective boot is worn that can limit excess movement as the healing process takes place. If your child has fallen, and complains of foot pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly treat a broken foot.

A broken foot requires immediate medical attention and treatment. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Robert Fink from Brunswick Foot & Ankle Group. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot typically breaking when bended, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.

Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blue in color
  • Numbness
  • Cold
  • Misshapen
  • Cuts
  • Deformities

Those that suspect they have a broken foot shoot seek urgent medical attention where a medical professional could diagnose the severity.

Treatment for broken bones varies depending on the cause, severity and location. Some will require the use of splints, casts or crutches while others could even involve surgery to repair the broken bones. Personal care includes the use of ice and keeping the foot stabilized and elevated.

Is There a Cure for Gout?

When a gout attack occurs, severe pain and discomfort often accompany this condition. It is considered to be a form of arthritis, and can occur as a result of genetic factors or from the foods that are eaten. Specific types of foods have elevated levels of purines. This may cause crystals to lodge in the joints of the big toe, and will typically cause redness and swelling. These foods can include shellfish, red meat, and drinks that are laden with sugar. There may be medications that can be taken to relieve some of the symptoms, despite the fact that there is no cure for gout. There are methods that can be implemented, which can possibly prevent painful gout attacks from occurring. These can consist of engaging in a frequent exercise program, and maintaining healthy eating habits, including drinking plenty of water daily. If you have developed gout, it is strongly suggested that you speak to a podiatrist as quickly as possible to obtain relief.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Robert Fink from Brunswick Foot & Ankle Group. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
